From staff reports

MOULTRIE — Brothers in Medicine — made up of 17 medical students — aims to advance awareness, education and research on the social determinants of health that impact the black community, specifically in rural areas like Moultrie.

The work these students are doing in the community is critical to building trust while also helping to shape the future generation of medical professionals.

One recent initiative led by the organization included going to a local barber shop and providing free health screenings. Of the screenings provided, seven out of eight individuals had elevated or high blood pressure, and the majority of those screened were unaware of their levels.

As a result, Brothers in Medicine was able to educate these individuals on what a safe blood pressure reading is, the symptoms associated with high blood pressure and ways to lower their readings.
