Column a reminder of what’s important

MARTY HELDENBERG

Thank you so much for the poignant column by Loran Smith of August 10th.

Since the loss of our youngest son nearly six years ago, our lives and everyday events are measured by cherished memories of his life, and especially the final year he was with us. From the initial surgery and subsequent diagnosis, to each and every test, appointment and surgery, wonderful, meaningful days spent together, ignoring the “elephant in the room,” and his efforts and willingness to spare us, the grief he knew would engulf us, when that final day arrived.

You may reside in an opulent house, drive the fanciest car and wear the latest fashions, but this column serves to remind us, as parents, to treasure each child and the time you are allowed together because, in the final analysis, as evidenced by recent world events, and disasters, family is all we have!
