ALBANY — The Albany Police Department launched two vehicle theft investigations on Friday, both of which involved juvenile suspects.
Officers responded to the 2000 block of Tompkins Avenue at around 8:15 a.m. regarding the theft of a black 2007 Ford Explorer, and were told by dispatchers the vehicle was on the 2200 block of Broad Avenue and from another officer that it was likely on the 2200 block of East Oglethorpe Boulevard.
The reporting officer, McKinley Windom, said in a report narrative that contact was made with two individuals at a gas station on East Oglethorpe who said a male wearing a hoodie exited the vehicle and ran northward.
Windom said he was told the suspect was across the street, and a male was seen running on the east side of the nearby Pizza Hut. The male, determined to be 15, was identified by the two people at the gas station after being taken into custody.
The officer got an account from the victim on what happened.
“She advised that she started her car up this morning to warm it up and went back in the house,” the report said. “She stated that her kids were ready and one of them looked outside and told her that the car was gone.”
The report said the vehicle was later released to the victim, who found a maroon hoodie that did not belong to her. The suspect confirmed that the hoodie was his. The report said the case was forwarded to investigators.
Shortly before 5 p.m. that day, officers responded to the 900 block of South Street with a man reporting that his wife’s 2014 Cadillac SRX had been stolen. The APD touched base with OnStar and was able to pinpoint the vehicle’s location, which was found in the alley on the 2100 block of Grady Street.
The reporting officer, Dontavious Bonner, said he was told by another officer that the occupants of the vehicle jumped out and starting running northbound.
“A perimeter was set and the three occupants of the vehicle were caught by three different officers,” a narrative written by Bonner said. “The three juveniles were identified.”
The report said one of the juveniles was caught on the 2100 block of South Jackson Street after refusing several commands to stop. The boy was searched, but nothing was found.
The Cadillac was not damaged during the incident. The case was cleared by arrest.
