ALBANY — Liberty House, a nonprofit that serves domestic violence survivors and their families, recognized the Georgia Federation of Woman’s Club Albany chapter with the Diamond Service Award for outstanding service at the annual Liberty House Gala in November.
Camilla Phillips, a member of the club and Liberty House advisory board, said the award came as “a total surprise” and accepted the award for work done with Liberty House on behalf of the Woman’s Club.
“We did what is called a day of service,” Phillips said. “It is to help abused women and children across the state. Our club, of course, had Albany. We set up at and collected more than $7,000 worth of materials that they could use at Liberty House.
“We just told the public who we were and what we were collecting for, and everyone was generous. Everyone in the club helped out. I was surprised (that) everybody participated. It was very successful.”
Phillips added that the Woman’s Club had three trucks full of items to donate to Liberty House. She later presented the Diamond Service Award to the Woman’s Club President Sharyn Davis at the organization’s meeting last month.
Phillips said the club started doing drives for domestic violence organizations three years ago, after she received training in Athens to help her recognize and understand abuse.
“I hadn’t really known anything about that until I met a lady here in Albany who was a victim,” she said. “She donates her time, told me her story, and I just became interested. It has just been something that has carried over. I guess I’ll just always volunteer for that because it’s so important.”
As for what comes next, Phillips said she will donate more supplies from the Woman’s Club to Liberty House. She said the Liberty House sees so many abused clients that the nonprofit is trying to renovate another facility next year.
Phillips said the club will help furnish a room at the new building.
“I will continue to volunteer as long as I can,” she said.
