DOERUN — Denerick Simpson is one of only 10 nationwide recipients of a $10,000 Bridging the Dream Scholarship for graduate students from The Sallie Mae Fund, in partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Currently, Simpson is a master’s student at Savannah State University, studying public administration with, he says, hopes of empowering economically disadvantaged communities through his passion for higher education and service.

Simpson was selected from more than 470 applicants based on his academic performance and how he plans to leverage his degree and career to help advance social justice within his community.

Growing up in a single-parent household in an under-resourced community with his father suffering from a traumatic brain injury, Simpson was forced to grow up at a young age. His background as a disadvantaged youth ignited his passion for improving higher educational systems.

The application window for the next Bridging the Dream scholarships will open on Feb. 6.
