ALBANY — Dave Davies, headmaster at Deerfield-Windsor School, has informed the Board of Trustees at the school that he will be leaving his position at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year, according to Ron Mitchell, chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Davies made the resignation public Thursday night in an email that was sent shortly after informing Mitchell of his decision to step down.

“Dave has been an outstanding leader for the DWS community, bringing vision and dedication to his role as head of school over the past seven years,” Mitchell said. “Dave has also been a great friend and active member of the DWS and Albany communities.

“Dave has led a meaningful transition of DWS during his tenure, and we wish Dave and Gina all the best as they move on to the next chapter in their lives.”

Davies said he will work with the board to ensure a smooth transition.

“I am proud of what the DWS community has accomplished in the past seven years.,” Davies said. ”We have made improvements in facilities, programs, and finances, and the School is in a strong position. I am grateful to the Deerfield-Windsor and Albany communities for their support.

“I will continue to work with the school through this transition period.”

The Board of Trustees has begun the search for the next head of school for Deerfield-Windsor and has engaged Southern Teachers Agency from Charlottesville, Va., to assist with the search.

“Seven years ago when I was interviewing to become Headmaster of Deerfield-Windsor School, a member of the Search Committee asked me how long I would stay if I were hired. My first response was ‘how long will you have me?’” Davies wrote in his resignation letter to the Board. “My more serious answer was that I thought that eight to ten years was a good length of service. That period gives a Headmaster time to assess a school, make connections, and accomplish the strategic plans set forth.

“Next year will be my eighth year, and after much thought and prayer, I have decided that it will be my last year at Deerfield-Windsor. Gina and I want to be able to search for our next home and career locations, and it is difficult to do so without a defined time frame. Also, a proper search for head of a school of Deerfield-Windsor’s caliber requires more than a year.”
