ALBANY — Dougherty County School System Superintendent Ken Dyer confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a male teacher has been charged with two counts of felony sexual assault of a student Wednesday morning at Monroe High School.

An inappropriate touching incident occurred on campus, and the victim was a male.

“A student at Monroe Comprehensive High School reported an incident of inappropriate touching by a staff member to school police Wednesday,” Dyer said. “The complaint was immediately investigated. After reviewing video evidence and conducting an interview with the student and consulting with outside agencies, including the Lily Pad SANE Center, the Department of Family and Children Services and the District Attorney’s Office, it was determined that there was sufficient evidence to support an arrest.”

Subsequently, a Monroe staff member was charged by DCSS School Police with two felony counts of sexual assault by persons with a supervisory or disciplinary authority.

Although the matter remains under criminal investigation, Dyer said he has recommended termination of the employee.

“Student safety remains our top priority in the Dougherty County School System,” the superintendent said. “As soon as this incident was brought to our attention, our investigators and administrators acted swiftly to investigate it, remove the staff member from the school setting and take appropriate steps to bring charges. We will work with the student and the student’s family to ensure that any counseling that is needed is provided.”

Dyer refused to name the teacher because the investigation remains active. The identity of the student was also withheld as he is a minor.
