ST. SIMONS ISLAND — Southwest Georgia Home School Association Key Club members continued the club’s award-winning tradition at the recent 2017 Georgia District Key Club Convention.

Club members brought home honors including Traditional Scrapbook (second place), the Dr. Barron Outstanding Community Service Award, and a second-place award to member Jonathan Morey, the Southwest Georgia Home School Association president, in the Oratory contest.

Also, Allie Dunn, who is the Division 9 lieutenant governor and SWGHSA secretary, and Taylor Hatfield each received Georgia Sheriffs Youth Home Awards and awards for promoting the Eliminate Project to eradicate neonatal tetanus, which afflicts pregnant women and newborns in Third World nations. Taylor also was recognized as Outstanding Club Officer and received the Robert F. Lucus Award for Outstanding Lieutenant Governor. She also was recognized as Key Club Student of the Year, chosen from among 6,200 high school students.

Also attending the convention were Kiwanis advisor Darlene Butler, faculty advisor Elizabeth Morey, co-faculty advisor Toni Hatfield, Sarah Daniels, the SWGHSA Key Club bulletin editor, C. J. Dunn, Merrilee Montgomery and Dr. and Mrs. Cliff Dunn.

“They did an amazing job this year, and they only had 35 students,” Butler said of the group, which typically includes 55 students but 20 graduated last year. “I am so proud of this Key Club. They competed with clubs that have around 150 to 200 members.”

The Southwest Georgia Home School Association Key Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County.
