ALBANY — Albany music and arts lovers can enjoy a special night of traditional jazz in an intimate setting while also supporting local arts and culture Sunday as Albany’s Renaissance Connection presents “Jazzin the Quarters: A Vesper Jazz Experience.”
According to Renaissance Connection Executive Director Femi Anderson, the Jazzin’ the Quarters event, which will take place at the Albany Museum of Art, is the first in a yearlong series of fundraising events for the nonprofit and for local arts.
“This event will serve as a fundraiser for the organization, which will allow us to continue art programming for the community,” said Anderson. “Renaissance Connection Inc. is an arts and cultural nonprofit (501-(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting creativity through all forms of art for the educational advancement of the community.”
Sunday’s event, which is inspired by a trip Anderson and some friends took this summer, is rooted in traditional jazz culture and will feature a performance from one of the area’s most popular jazz outfits, the Southern Arts Musical Ensemble, who will be joined by vocalist Erlencia Mumphrey.
Additionally, the event will include Live Art by artist Carmen Young and what Anderson called a “delicious jazz supper club meal” prepared by Chef Travis Robinson.
“Renaissance Connection wants to give our community an opportunity to appreciate traditional jazz and introduce it to others in a sociable setting,” Anderson said. “The idea was further fueled by a recent trip to the Atlanta Jazz Fest over the summer, so we wanted to bring that kind of atmosphere to Albany.”
A silent auction is also planned during which patrons can bid on a variety of items, with all the proceeds going to benefit Renaissance Connection and its mission of promoting the arts in Southwest Georgia.
Sunday’s “Jazzin the Quarters: a Vesper Jazz Experience” starts at 6 p.m. and advance tickets, priced at $35, are currently on sale at www.renaissanceconnect.com or by calling (229) 436-0802. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door the night of the event for $40.
