LEESBURG — A Lee County woman has been charged with two counts of child cruelty in this week’s death of her 4-year-old foster child.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office officials said Friday afternoon that Leshia Green, of 141 Mayfield Drive in Lee County, had been arrested on two felony counts of cruelty to a child in the first degree.
“The foster mother has been arrested,” Lee County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Lewis Harris Jr. said. “Further charges (in the case) are pending.
“We’re still waiting for lab results to come back from the GBI crime lab and for evidence to be processed.”
Lee SO officials said the 911 call center was contacted at 4:09 a.m. Wednesday about an injured child at the Mayfield residence, with EMTs arriving at the home three minutes later. The injured child, age 4, was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and was pronounced deceased a short time afterward.
A cause of death has not been announced.
Authorities said at last seven other individuals were at the house. In addition to Green, a grandmother, another adult and four other children, including one special-needs child, were in the home, authorities said.
Lee County officials called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to help with the case because Lee SO doesn’t have specialized equipment needed to analyze the evidence.
Harris said Wednesday that the child who died had been in the custody of the foster parents when the incident occurred.
