Local architect to be honored with historical marker
Viewing of Shackelford House part of dedication ceremony
From Staff Reports
ALBANY — Edward Vason Jones, an Albany native and renowned self-taught architect, will be honored with the dedication of a historical marker on April 24.
The Georgia Historical Society, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia-Albany Town Committee, and the Albany-Dougherty Historic Preservation Commission will unveil the marker detailing Jones’ life in front of the Hugh Shackelford House, a home Jones designed.
Paul Forgey, the planning director for the city of Albany, said the Historic Preservation commission has discussed the marker for a long time, but only in the last year and a half has the talk been followed up with action.
“About two years ago,” Forgey said, “the commission hosted an exhibit displaying some of Jones’ works.” Now, it is joining the other organizations in taking the next steps to honor the local legend.
The dedication will be held at 1801 Dawson Road at 5 p.m. The Shackelford House will also be open for viewing from 4:30-5 p.m.
