Police officer attacked at Albany store burglary
Suspect attacks police officer and escapes

ALBANY — The Albany Police Department is seeking the help of the public to identify and locate the person responsible for a burglary and assault that took place Sunday at the Dollar General Store on South Slappey Boulevard.
Patrolman Nicholas Parker with APD responded to an active burglar alarm at the store located at 408 S. Slappey Blvd. around 2:49 a.m. Sunday.
According to reports, upon arrival Parker observed an individual coming out of the broken glass front door of the business. Parker gave ordered to the suspect to place his hands behind his back, but the man did not cooperate and a struggle ensued.
The incident was recorded on the store’s surveillance cameras.
During the confrontation, the video shows the assailant strike the officer in the head with an unknown blunt object. The officer then deployed his Taser, striking the assailant in the back.
The suspect, according to reports, ripped the Taser wires free and fled.
Parker sustained a contusion on the left side of his head, reports show, and Emergency Medical Services were called while police canvassed the area.
“No internal injuries were sustained,” APD Chief Michael Persley said. “Officer Parker is recovering at home.”
Officials at the Dollar General were unavailable for comment.
