ALBANY — Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards said Monday that, depending on additional factors relating to the case, that he intended to upgrade the aggravated assault charge against Kamesha Shanty Jackson following a fatal stabbing on Saturday.
Jackson, 35, was charged with aggravated assault after a stabbing incident at 806 Blaylock St. just before 4 a.m. on Saturday. The man who was stabbed, Charles Porter, 39, died at around 4 p.m. that day.
Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said Porter and Jackson had been in an argument and that Jackson stabbed Porter in the upper thigh with a knife.
Banks said Porter lost a significant amount of blood and was transported Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in critical condition while Jackson was taken into custody.
Jackson was booked into the Dougherty County Jail on the aggravated assault charge. Edwards said Monday he told law enforcement on Saturday that, if Porter were to die, a warrant for murder could be issued.
Edwards said evidence was still being processed Monday. He added that the two were living together, which adds a domestic violence component. If Jackson’s record indicates a history of domestic violence, she may receive “enhanced punishment,” he said.
Jail records Monday afternoon showed Jackson charged with aggravated assault.
