ALBANY — A suspect police were seeking in connection to a shooting on Avalon Avenue earlier this week has been arrested.

Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said Jamarious Devonte Wright, 23, turned himself in Wednesday afternoon. He was interviewed by APD Gang Unit investigators and detectives from the APD Criminal Investigations Bureau before being booked at the Dougherty County Jail on a firearms charge.

The APD charged two men, including the man who was shot, with firearms and aggravated assault charges, and warrants were taken out on Wright. Russell Haynes, 32, who was shot in the abdomen during a scuffle around 3 p.m. Monday, had been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and drug charges.

Nigel Shorter, 23, was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault (party to a crime), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with evidence. Meanwhile, detectives issued warrants against Wright for charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The Dougherty County Jail reported Wright was booked on two charges — firearm possession by a convicted felon or first offense probationer and parole violation.

Banks said Wright and Shorter were inside an 1106 Avalon Ave. residence when Haynes arrived. She said detectives believe Wright and Shorter were armed, and that the initial investigation revealed that Haynes confronted a man who Haynes believed to be a suspect in a robbery in which Haynes was the victim.

Haynes, who police said was armed, got into a scuffle with the man. During that scuffle, Banks said, Haynes was shot.
