ALBANY — A three-year veteran of the Albany Police Department who was stabbed early Wednesday morning has been released from the hospital while the individual he shot has died.

“The Albany police officer injured this morning during an officer-involved shooting in the 500 block of South Madison Street and West Lincoln Avenue has been released from the hospital,” Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the APD, said. “The individual who was shot has died as a result of his injuries.

“The name of the officer and individual will be released at a later time. The GBI is continuing the investigation into the incident and further updates will be prepared and disseminated as the Albany Police Department is updated by the GBI.”

Banks said the 34-year-old police officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation continues.

Authorities said the stabbing and shooting occurred around 5:06 a.m. when the police officer responded to a suspicious person call.

“Upon arrival, the officer made contact with a black male,” Banks said. “At some point, the officer was stabbed with an unknown object and the black male was shot by the officer.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the incident.
