ALBANY — Concert-goers will be able to get acquainted with Albany Symphony Orchestra performers, who will showcase their talents at the season’s first chamber music concert, set for 4 p.m. Nov. 12.
“We’re doing it at First United Methodist (Church of Albany),” Albany Symphony Music Director Claire Fox Hillard said. “We’re going to feature 11 players from the orchestra. They’re excited about it.”
The Sunday program at the church, located at 307 Flint Ave., is being billed as “How to Chill on a Sunday Afternoon.”
The concert will emphasize woodwinds and strings in a program that will feature pieces from Mozart’s Serenade in C Minor, K. 388 and Dvorak’s Serenade in D minor, Op. 44.
Scheduled to perform are woodwind players Casey Knowlton and Siobhan Ciulia, oboe; Peter Geldich and Jennifer Karel, clarinet; Shannon Lowe and Kayleigh Bagley, bassoon, and David LaRussa, Cece Stevens and Kadin De La Barrera, horn. They will be joined by Adam Collins, violoncello, and Gabriel Monticello, bass.
Hillard, who will conduct the ensemble, said the concert will give the musicians an opportunity to perform in a more intimate setting than a full orchestra concert.
“We thought it would be a good way to feature some of our players,” he said. “We thought it would be nice to create a group from within our orchestra.”
After the concert, the members of the audience will be able to mingle with the musicians at a reception.
“It’s a great opportunity to introduce the players to the community,” Hillard said.
Tickets for the concert, all general admission, are $20, adults, and $10, students. Tickets can be purchased online at albanysymphony.org or by calling the ASO office at (229) 430-8933.
The next performances of the full Symphony are on Dec. 16 in a multimedia concert of the Peppermint Pops, the ASO’s holiday show that is returning this season to the Albany Municipal Audtorium at 200 N. Jackson St. Part of the concert will feature the ASO performing the musical score to a presentation of the holiday film “The Snowman.”
The symphony will perform a shorter matinee of the Pops aimed at younger listeners, preceded by an instrument petting zoo, at 11 a.m. Tickets are $15.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. Peppermint Pops, part of the Paul Peach Masterworks series, are $25, general admission; $35, reserved, and $10, students.
Tickets for each of the Peppermint Pops concerts also are available on the symphony website or by calling the office.
