ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor’s 34-13 victory over Southland on Friday night was the Knights’ fourth straight win. Deerfield jumped out to an early 34-point lead and never looked back.

Quarterback Tyler Lowe finished with three total touchdowns and the Knights also received rushing touchdowns from Cameron McCook and Garrett Jones.

“We just came out and executed well on offense in the first half,” Deerfield-Windsor coach Allen Lowe said. “We really did a good job defensively of holding Southland down.

Deerfield (6-2) enters its bye week with a 4-0 record in region play. Lowe said the Knights will use the bye week to fine-tune things and make small changes to the offense.

“We will probably use it to go back and fine-tune some fundamental stuff that we haven’t really had a chance to work on,” Lowe said. “We will try to add a few more little packages here and there just to try and utilize the kids that we have.”

With only two games remaining in the season, the Knights will face Terrell Academy following the bye week followed by an Oct. 30 matchup with Valwood.

Changes in offensive playbook lead to Mitchell County win

After putting up just 14 points in their last three games, Eagles head coach Larry Cornelius decided it was time for a change.

Mitchell used their bye week to install a new offense and the results showed in their 42-0 victory Friday night over Baconton Charter.

The Eagles will still run the option, but it will no longer be the read-option that they previously ran.

In addition to moving away from the read-option, the Eagles will take most of their snaps under center as opposed to in the shotgun.

“We are not as fast as we had been the previous four years,” Cornelius said. “This is a way to kind of get to holes a little bit quicker. We are just not a read-type of offense as much as we had been in the past.”

Mitchell put up a season high 42 points with the new offense. Through their first five games, the Eagles were averaging just 10.6 points per game. They were also stuck in a four-game losing streak.

“The biggest thing I was happy about was that we didn’t turn the ball over,” Cornelius said. “We didn’t put the ball on the ground, I think we had three bad snaps but we recovered them all. That is huge to not have any turnovers after we had big turnover issues the last five games.”

The victory makes Mitchell 1-0 in Region 1-A play. The Eagles (2-4) will take their new offense to Colquitt to face Miller County next week.

Pelham earns victory over Thomasville

Pelham was up 12-0 at halftime and added another touchdown in the second half on their way to a 20-13 victory over Thomasville.

This is the first time the Hornets have beaten Thomasville in 21 attempts that span more than 93 years.

“I thought our guys came out and ran the ball hard against a great Thomasville team,” Pelham coach Dondrial Pinkins said. “We came out and played well in the first half. We didn’t play as well in the second half. But, in the end our guys stood up and we finished the ball game.”

The win signals the end of a two-game losing streak for the Hornets, who will face Early County next week.

Pelham (4-2) moves to 1-1 in Region 1-AA play with four games left in the season.

This and that

An altercation involving a member of the Lee County chain crew and an assistant football coach at Colquitt County during the game between the two teams at Trojan Field Friday in Leesburg resulted in no arrests as previously reported.
