ALBANY — Two Sherwood Christian Academy football players, free safety Kenney Brown and linebacker/defensive tackle Chris Hudson, signed letters of intent Thursday morning to continue their football careers.

Brown signed to play at St. Francis, an NCAA Division I-AA school in Pennsylvania, while Hudson signed with Greensboro College, an NCAA Division III school in Greensboro, NC.

“Kenney Brown is a four-year player for us, tremendous, tremendous young man, great character, great work ethic,” SCA football coach Otis Covington said. “He’s what you want in a football player.”

Brown had 111 tackles as a junior and had 92 tackles during the 2014 season while playing with an injury. He was a three-time all-Region and all-state selection.

“I’m just really happy for him and his family,” Covington said.

Brown signed to play at St. Francis, an NCAA Division I-AA school in Pennsylvania.

“I think he’ll do well,” Covington said. “I’m really happy for him.”

Brown chose St. Francis over Morehead State and Union among others.

“When I got there, the coaching staff was close to me,” Brown said. “It felt like a home environment, something that felt like home even though it was a far away place.”

Brown said the coaches at St. Francis have told him that he will remain in the free safety spot.

Hudson chose Greensboro over Stetson University and Middle Tennessee State.

“I just liked Greensboro … I liked the atmosphere,” Hudson said. “They want me to come in as an outside linebacker. The position is open. If I come down and work hard, I should get the spot.”

Covington couldn’t have been happier.

“We’re just really proud of his versatility, his leadership that he brought and his in-game effort was tremendous,” Covington said. “He’s one of the toughest kids that we had. He plays hurt. He’s never going to give up, and that’s why he has this opportunity today. I know that he’s going to do well at Greensboro College because he’s a great young man, and he has tremendous character.”

The work ethic of Hudson and Brown has had a big influence on their SCA teammates.

“Kenney and Chris are very hard-working players and very dedicated about the sport of football,” SCA running back Demetrius Reed said. “As far as I know, both of them have been playing football since they were young, and it’s something they wanted to do all their lives. I’m very proud of them to be able to accomplish their dream to play college football.”
