As of this past week, Darton State College officially has a new name and a new sign. Yet, as the merger between Darton State College and Albany State University is still being realized by the community, it has already brought quite a few changes for me and other students.

In short, the merger caused my degree program and others to have to be abruptly changed to a new degree/major.

Based on recent enrollment numbers, it seems that many students have used this and other ensuing administrative issues as reasons for changing institutions or for not returning to Albany State University. However, I have chosen to remain at this college through this process because I have found that it still has teachers and faculty who care about students’ work and success.

At the end of the day, this is what makes the difference at any college or university — not its name, not its size, not whether it has a football team, and not the color of the student body. This is why Albany State University will still be my college.
