Lee County’s Colton Edmunds signs with Thomas University
All-Region performer is Lee’s first boys soccer signee in 10 years

LEESBURG — Lee County High School boys soccer player Colton Edmunds was surprised.
When he found out he was the first signee from the boys program in 10 years, he couldn’t believe it.
“It means a lot,” Edmunds said Monday afternoon when a crowded media center watched him sign with Thomas University.
“I had heard that earlier today. It feels good.”
The versatile player had also considered Kennesaw State, but when making his final decision, playing closer to home won out. The all-region performer helped the Trojans into the state tournament this past season playing a variety of positions.
He smiled and posed for pictures, but the soft-spoken senior didn’t offer many words. However, his facial expressions showed his excitement to continue his collegiate career.
“I’m kind of a shy person and Thomas University being a smaller school, that was a big part of it (staying closer to home),” he said. “I’m not ready to give up playing soccer yet.”
Lee County coach Kevin Pych doesn’t have a son but he said if he did, he’d like for his son to show qualities similar to Edmunds.
He said the senior is a hard-worker, organized and versatile.
“This is a huge day for him,” Pych said. “We’re very excited for him. I know this is a proud moment for him and his family.”
Edmunds played several positions this year, including center back, center mid fielder and up front. He doesn’t know where he will play in college, but he’s glad to have the opportunity to continue his career.
“I’m up for anything,” he said.
Pych said not only was it a proud day for Edmunds, he said it was also a good day for the Lee soccer program. He said younger players will see that Edmunds’ hard work landed him a scholarship, and he hopes the younger players will follow in the senior’s path.
“He has to keep working hard,” Pych said. “But he gives these younger guys someone to look up to.”
