Prep Football Round-Up: Westover wins in fight-delayed game; Worth County rolls and more

ALBANY — A fourth-quarter fight delayed the Westover-Sumter County game Friday night at Hugh Mills but the Westover Patriots (1-1) came from behind twice to win 30-18. Interim head coach Octavia Jones credited his team’s depth and conditioning for the win.

The Patriots led 28-18 in the fourth quarter after quarterback Keyon Thomas found Jalen Mclloyd for a 45-yard touchdown pass and then Dominque Ball for the two-point conversion to give Westover a 28-18 lead.

And the fight ensued shortly afterward.

The huge melee delayed the game as officials and coaches broke up the fight. Several players from each team were ejected.

Westover got on track in the third quarter when Thomas scored on a nine-yard run early in the third quarter to tie the game at 12 before the Panthers mounted an 83-yard scoring drive to go ahead 18-12.

Later in the third, a huge pass interference call against Sumter gave the Patriots a first down near midfield and two plays later Thomas connected with Zavion Tillman for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Westover took the lead, 20-18, on the two-point conversion when Thomas hit Anthony Chatmon with another pass.

“The guys came out in the second half and started to execute our game plan,” the coach said. “We started to wear them down a bit and our depth and conditioning was a huge factor in us being able to get the win.”

Westover will travel to Columbus to play Spencer next Friday night in a non-region game.

Worth Co. 44 Mitchell Co. 12

SYLVESTER — The Worth County Rams (1-1) opened their home football season Friday night with a big 44-12 win over Mitchell County (0-2). The Rams built a 37-0 lead before Mitchell County was able to get onto the board in the third quarter.

Sophomore running back Kayden Chester ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries to lead the Ram offense. He also caught a pass from quarterback Lyndon Worthy and turned it into a 34-yard touchdown play to begin the scoring Friday night.

Junior kicker William Crowe booted five of six extra-point attempts successfully and also hit a 40-yard field goal for the winners.

Worth County will travel to Upson-Lee next Friday night while Mitchell County will host the “Backyard Brawl” against arch-rival Pelham next week.

Deerfield-Windsor 30 Maclay 28

TALLAHASSEE — The Deerfield-Windsor Knights (1-1) were down 21-10 at halftime Friday night and came back to win 30-28 in what Head Coach Jake McCrae called a dogfight.

“We came out in the first half and played the most uninspired ball we have played since I have been here, McCrae said. “But we followed that by two of the best quarters we have played to come back and finish. We got ahead and then got down again with four minutes remaining. But we finished. It was an ugly win but a lot of stuff to be proud of and grow from.”

Sophomore quarterback Lane Sceals threw three touchdown passes and senior kicker Waylon Marbury kicked a 49-yard field goal for the Knights. The defense also made an impressive stand late in the game on a fourth and two play that allowed the Knights to run out the clock.

The Knights will travel to Locust Grove to face Strong Rock Christian next Friday night.

Dougherty 34 Randolph-Clay 0

CUTHBERT — Quarterback Kameron Davis threw three touchdown passes and Daishon Malone scored on a one-yard run to lead the No. 10-ranked Dougherty Trojans (2-0) over Randolph-Clay (0-2) Friday night in Cuthbert.

Davis hit Braylon King with two touchdown passes and hit Braylen Still with the other pass for a touchdown.

The Trojan defense was led by Chancie Brown and Maurice Davis with big hits for the Trojans. Jaquavius Hallman pulled down an interception for Dougherty.

The Trojans will host Stockbridge Friday night at Hugh Mills. Stockbridge lost 47-27 Friday night to Colquitt County in Moultrie.
