ALBANY — While the affiliation might have changed through the years, one thing that remains consistent is the Scot Hemmings Baseball Camp’s dedication to providing a quality experience for youth in south Georgia.

The camp, which has been affiliated with Albany State for the past three years, took place this past week and saw the highest turnout in its eight-year history. Hemmings, now the baseball head coach at Albany State following the university’s merger with Darton State, said 175 kids came out to ASU’s West Campus to work on the fundamentals of baseball and have fun in the process.

High school coaches, ASU baseball players and coaches, as well as the softball and golf coaches, were in attendance to help, and Hemmings said it was great to see the support for the past season carry over into the summer.

“It’s a community event, and it’s just another example of the baseball community supporting Albany State baseball,” he said.

Hemmings added that a lot went into gaining support through the years.

“I equate this support to a recipe. There’s a lot of ingredients that go into the recipe,” Hemmings said. “It’s one part our free coaches’ clinics, it’s one part our players out in the community doing community service. It’s one part us hosting a free fireworks show, thanking the community for their support. It’s getting out in the schools and reading.

“It’s the way our players conduct themselves on and off the field. It’s the record we had this year, the championships we won … it’s a combination of a lot of ingredients in the recipe.”

Hemmings said he’s thankful for the support south Georgia continues to show.

“I would think next year we would put 200-plus kids out here,” he said. “We’ve got nothing but positive feedback and a lot of positive comments, and we’re just thankful we’ve had good weather. No rain, no lightning, and we’ve been fortunate enough to make an impact on this community once again.”
