GSW men’s golf wins Anderson Invitational
Shooting a final-round 308, the Georgia Southwestern men’s golf team won the Anderson (South Carolina) Invitational on Tuesday.
Georgia Southwestern finished at 615, besting Anderson by a stroke. Bob Jones finished third, followed by Brevard, Erskine, Spartanburg Methodist and Emmanuel.
Nix Duncan shot a final-round 76 to finish tied for second overall. Elias Birkeland finished tied for 10th, while Wil Hernandez tied for 14th, Ryan Cahill fnished 22nd and Oly Brown took 24th.
Lee County softball remains perfect in region play
The Lee County softball team improved to 6-0 in GHSA Region 1-6A competition Tuesday with a 4-3 win over Houston County.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Lee County put runners on second and third. Back-to-back one-out singles by Kaylin Mathis and Mikayla Eubanks tied things at 3, and, following a walk, Mathis scored on an infield single by Karlee Back to wrap up the victory.
Abby Hughes went the distance for Lee County (10-9), striking out 10 and walking three while giving up three earned runs on four hits.
Lee County closes out regular-season region play with games Thursday at Valdosta and Tuesday at home against Coffee.
Also Tuesday, Cairo beat Westover 13-0 and 16-1.
Deerfield-Windsor hosting cross country meet
The Deerfield-Windsor cross country team is hosting the Deerfield-Windsor Invitational on Saturday at Albany State West.
The boys’ varsity race is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, with the girls to follow. Middle school races also will be run.
More than 800 runners are expected to compete.
