South Georgia Tech men finish second
The South Georgia Tech men’s basketball team fell 74-52 to Central Georgia Tech in the championship game of the NJCAA Region XVII men’s basketball tournament Saturday in Rome.
“We played our hearts out on Friday,” South Georgia head coach Travis Garrett said about the Jets’ semifinal effort, a victory over top-seeded Georgia Highlands that came after rallying from a 20-point halftime deficit.
In the semifinal, sophomore forward Marquel Wiggins took an elbow to the head and spent the night in the hospital. He did not play in the championship game.
South Georgia Tech was held to 25 points in the first half Saturday on 1-of-11 shooting from 3-point range and 27.8 percent overall shooting from the field.
Rico Simmons, who scored 27 points in the semifinal win, had 15 points in the final. Dawan Bass added 13 points in the final.
South Georgia Tech (20-12) finished as the NJCAA Region XVII runner-up for the second straight year.
GSW baseball swept on road
The Georgia Southwestern baseball team was swept in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series over the weekend at 25th-ranked Flagler College.
Flagler won the opener at Drysdale Field on Saturday, 5-3, followed with a 4-2 walk-off win in the doubleheader nightcap and closed out the series on Sunday with an 8-2 victory.
Andy Moore led GSW at the plate over the weekend with five hits. Jared Jones and Jason Baita collected four hits apiece, and both were walked twice.
Starting pitcher Kyle Britt held Flagler to one run in eight innings in Game 2.
GSW (3-15, 0-12 Peach Belt) heads to Auburn-Montgomery on Wednesday.
Terrell Academy posts victories
Terrell Academy’s baseball teams posted a pair of victories over the weekend.
Saturday, Terrell Academy defeated Brookwood 10-4 in Thomasville. Terrell Academy (3-1) recorded 11 hits, with each starter picking up at least one hit. Daniel Myers was the winning pitcher.
On Friday, Terrell Academy exploded for 16 runs on 20 hits in a 16-2 win at Crisp Academy.
Cole Lewis went 3-for-4 with four RBI, Garrett Sloan went 4-for-5 with three RBI and Cameron Jones went 4-for-5 with five RBI. Cameron Jones pitched a two-hitter.
Worth County baseball splits
Worth County’s baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday with Atkinson County, losing 11-10 and winning 10-4.
Atkinson County scored six runs in fifth inning of the opener before Worth County scored four runs in the final two innings to make it a one-run contest. Hunter Goodwin went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI in the opener, with Gabe Goff taking the loss.
Worth County’s Game 2 win was fueled by a 3-for-4, four-run effort by leadoff batter DJ Edwards. Griffin Melton was the winning pitcher.
Adult baseball league forming
The Georgia/Florida Adult Baseball League is organizing for the 2018 season.
Teams throughout southern Georgia and northern Florida are welcome to join. A league meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on March 21 at Ricky’s Restaurant on U.S. 84 in Bainbridge, with the season set to begin in mid-April.
