SQUAWKBOX: APRIL 11, 2026

What is going on at the Meredyth post office? The lobby was closed on Tuesday around 9:30 a.m. A fellow citizen said this wasn’t the first time this has happened lately. Not knowing when/if the Meredyth PO would be open, I drove to the main one on Slappey. The clerk said that her co-worker was headed over to cover at the Meredyth PO. It’s bad enough that our mail goes to Florida for distribution. Now we can’t even count on the neighborhood PO to be open.
A few years back, the federal government shut down hundreds of for-profit online colleges. They were basically selling degrees with almost no college work, and the degrees were worthless. Do you wonder about South New Hampshire University and Phoenix University TV ads asking people to sign up, send money and get a four-year degree? I wonder how many people in Georgia could even find New Hampshire on a map.
Doug Lorber is Albany’s premier actor. I always attend plays when he’s in the cast. Go Doug!
Regarding the 7-month-old baby that was shot and killed in New York: New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani blames the gun, not the criminal who pulled the trigger. The gun didn’t walk up to the baby and shoot him. If the criminal stabbed the baby with a knife, would he blame the knife?
Why would the President of the U.S. call for our military to commit genocide in Iran? There is no going back from that statement, particularly given some of the actions already taken and the continued threat of more. All through history, we have seen this and we have witnessed what has happened when people stand in awe vs. addressing the madness of such behavior. Autocrats, and dictators don’t change once you let them out of the closet.
Hey, knee-jerk Squawker, the season’s only 13 games old. How about showing a little patience before throwing out blanket condemnations? Go Braves.
City commissioners and mayor spend hours discussing a brewery visited by a handful of people that is, by definition, family-unfriendly. Meanwhile, dozens of children live in slum drug motels, and we all have to share the roads daily with dangerous drag-racing losers. Two issues that get zero attenstion. Priorities tell you a lot about someone’s moral compass, and these idiots continue to write their tickets to hell.
A tip should be based solely on the service provided in your opinion, not a percentage of your bill.
Trump’s no dummy. Align your goals to match the results. Change it every day if needed. Remember that for your review at work.
Iran always lies and uses negotiations to buy time. I fear that’s what is going on now.
Trump lies again, as usual. Says 178,000 jobs created but doesn’t tell you that 138,000 of those are striking health care workers coming back to work or that his net job creation so far is negative. He also touts a trade deficit decline of 55% so far this year, but doesn’t tell you about the increase in imports that business did last year to offset the trade tariffs he was proposing. If he speaks, it is always a deflection from his lack of real results.
Wow, I’m stunned. I see from Thursday’s Herald that Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful still exists. Take a look around downtown Albany and tell me there’s any kind of effort to clean up this pig sty.
