LEESBURG — Candidates for the mayor’s post and three city council positions in Leesburg as well as two council slots in Smithville are qualifying for those seats this week.

Lee County Elections Supervisor Veronica Johnson said the municipalities are conducting their own qualifying for the Nov. 7 elections.

“School Board and County Commission elections are held during even-numbered years, and municipal elections are held in odd years,” Johnson said.

Deadline to file for Lee County municipal elections is Friday at 4:30 p.m.

“Municipalities qualify their own candidates, and then they hand over the baton to us so we can hold the physical elections,” Johnson said. The elections supervisor also said she expects most, if not all, of the incumbents to file for re-election.

By Wednesday afternoon, Judy Powell, who represents Leesburg’s Post 1 on the City Council, and Richard Bush, who represents Post 3, were registered and qualified.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday, Leesburg Mayor Jim Quinn’s seat remained open, but Quinn said in a phone interview he intended to register later on Wednesday.

Leesburg’s Post 2 seat is currently held by Debra Long, who was also expected to qualify before Friday’s deadline.

By Wednesday, no contenders for any of the Leesburg positions had registered.

In Smithville, Ward 3 incumbent Ilean Mae Bady and Ward 4 incumbent Dwight Hickman have completed qualifying requirements. There had been no challengers for those posts by Wednesday.
