ALBANY – The city of Albany’s Recreation and Parks Department will host its annual Golden Age Prom, “A Night on the Red Carpet,” on June 21.

The event will take place at the Albany Civic Center at 100 W. Oglethorpe Blvd. It will run from 7-11 p.m. Tickets went on sale April 1 and are $25. They must be purchased in advance at the department’s main office at 1301 N. Monroe St. They will not be sold at the door.

The event is for people ages 50 or older. Tee Taylor, a recreation and parks supervisor, said each year the department hosts the prom is exciting. She said it gives seniors in the community a chance to get out and interact with people their age in a safe environment.

“The seniors get to get out of their house … meet new friends … dress up,” Taylor said.

This year’s theme is a “Red Carpet Affair.”

The prom attracts seniors from all across southwest Georgia. Last year’s Senior Prom was the first after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It saw its largest numbers, with about 200 seniors gracing the Albany Civic Center in their best dresses and tuxedos. This will be the prom’s 24th year, and Taylor said staff is expecting the attendance number to grow to around 300.

The event has moved locations over the years to accommodate the growing popularity. Taylor said everywhere they’ve taken the prom, they’ve outgrown the venue. She said having the prom at the Albany Civic Center is a way to show off Albany’s downtown as well as provide an accessible, central location.

Seniors can expect lots of dancing. Dance partners will be available to those who arrive solo. There will also be light refreshments.

Taylor said she wants seniors to know that if they’ve never been to the Golden Age Prom, they’re missing out.

Tickets will be available in advance until they sell out.
