These are the six finalists for the fan-voted People’s Choice Albany Herald High School Football Player of the Year for 2014. Online votes can be cast once per hour from an IP address. Voting ends Friday at noon.
AUSTIN CAIN
Position: Linebacker
School/Year: Deerfield-Windsor, Sr.
Why he’s here: A two-star star who was an all-state and all-region performer for the Knights. Cain finished with 118 tackle, including 68 solos. He also had an interception , recovered two fumbles and a sack to help Deerfield-Windsor to a 9-4 record.
TROY CHESTER
Position: Quarterback
School/Year: Mitchell County, Sr.
Why he’s here: Chester passed for 1,096 yards and 16 touchdowns to help Mitchell County win the Region 1-A title and make the state playoffs. He also rushed for 602 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 8.6 yards per carry.
JQ QUIMBLY
Position: Wide Receiver
School: Lee County, Sr.
Why he’s here: Caught 52 passes for 782 yards and nine touchdowns this season for the Trojans, capping off a decorated high school career where he finished with 125 all-time catches for 2,053 yards and 28 touchdowns.
DEMETRIUS REED
Position: Running Back
School: Sherwood Christian, Sr.
Why he’s here: Reed was a major player in helping the Eagles to the inaugural GICAA state championship. The dual-threat back rushed for 846 yards and finished with 246 yards receiving , helping Sherwood to an 11-1 finish.
TRENT THOMPSON
Position: Defensive Tackle/Offensive Lineman
School: Westover, Sr.
Why he’s here: The Georgia commit played on both sides of the ball this year for Westover. Thompson recorded 84 tackles, including 36 for loss, four sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery to help the Patriots to the state playoffs.
DAJOHN WILLIAMS
Position: Quarterback
School: Calhoun County, Sr.
Why he’s here: Williams was a major cog in helping Calhoun County to its best football season since 1993. The senior threw for 1,358 yards and 19 touchdowns to help the Cougars make the second round of the state football playoffs.
