Albany teen drowns in holding pond

ALBANY — Albany police say 13-year-old Fred Brown drowned in a retention pond Sunday afternoon while fishing with his 21-year-old brother.
Initial reports indicate the pair were fishing in a retention pond located on the property of the Georgia-Pacific box plant on the 400 block of Maxwell Drive when the younger boy caught a fish and fell into the water.
“All I can say right now is that we can confirm there was a tragic drowning Sunday in the retention pond of our Albany box plant,” Georgia-Pacific spokesperson Peggy Jaye said Monday morning. “We are currently cooperating with authorities and extend our sympathy to the family.”
Jaye added that the retention pond is located on Georgia-Pacific property and the brothers were not authorized to be on the property.
The case and investigation have been turned over to the Dougherty County District Attorney’s Child Death Team.
