ALBANY — When the state of South Carolina was inundated by flood water from Hurricane Joaquin recently devastating businesses and infrastructure along the coast, Albanians could not help but to feel a twang of pain. The wounds from the Albany floods of 1994 and 1998 remain.

It is because of these memories that the City of Albany has partnered with Interstate National Lease (a division of Taylor Trucking) in order to collect and deliver needed relief supplies to the flood victims of the stricken state. Interstate National Lease has donated the use of a 53-foot trailer for this endeavor which will be delivered to the aid site in South Carolina in the coming weeks.

The city has provided two collection sites and community volunteers to staff the sites for the collection of relief supplies.

The trailer that will be used to transport aid is currently parked in the rear of the James H. Gray, Sr. Civic Center at 100 W. Oglethorpe Blvd. Collection times for this location are 8 a.m. through 6 p.m. through Sunday.

On Oct. 19 collections will shift to the old Coca-Cola bottling company located at 925 Pine Ave. and continue through Oct. 22. Collection times are also 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on those days.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Agency has provided a priority list of needed items. The items include water, bleach, cleaning wipes, diapers and other non perishable baby items. All items must be new and unopened.

No other items will be accepted at this time.
