COLLEGE HOOPS ROUNDUP: Ga. Tech men stunned by Siena — again; UGA women edge TCU on late 3

ALBANY, N.Y. — Ryan Rossiter scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half and had 13 rebounds as Siena stunned Georgia Tech for the second time in program history, 62-57 on Wednesday night.

Entering the game, the Saints (4-6) considered their 76-68 win over the Yellow Jackets in the 1994 NIT to be their greatest home win.

Rossiter had his 40th double-double despite a sickness requiring two IVs before the game and a blow to the face late in the first half that sent him to the locker room for medical attention.

Siena used a 15-2 second-half run to turn a six-point deficit into a 49-44 lead with 9:51 to play.

Georgia Tech (6-5) tied the game twice, but never regained the lead in the homecoming of coach Paul Hewitt, who left Siena for the Yellow Jackets in 2000.

The Saints hit 6 of 8 free throws in the final 38 seconds.

Glen Rice paced Georgia Tech with 15 points.

MEN’S TOP 25 ROUNDUP:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Kemba Walker’s 20 points and a suffocating defense led No. 4 Connecticut to an overwhelming 81-52 victory over Harvard on Wednesday night, hiking the Huskies’ record to 10-0.

It was the ninth straight game in which Walker scored 20 or more points for UConn, which also had Jeremy Lamb (11) and Alex Oriakhi (10) in double figures.

UConn’s man-to-man defense blanketed the Crimson (7-3), holding them to 30 percent shooting, including 4 of 31 from 3-point range. Keith Wright topped Harvard with 18 points.

Harvard missed its first 12 shots and did not make a field goal until 11:53 remained in the first half as UConn took a 13-2 lead. The Huskies stretched the margin to 48-21 at halftime as the Crimson shot just 23.3 percent, including 1 of 15 on 3s.

No. 5 Syracuse 93, Drexel 65

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Kris Joseph had a career-high 25 points, Scoop Jardine added 21 and Rick Jackson had his ninth double-double of the season as Syracuse remained unbeaten with a victory over Drexel.

It was the final nonconference game for Syracuse (13-0), which begins Big East play Tuesday at home against Providence. Drexel (8-2) had won six straight since a loss at Rhode Island.

Four years ago, the Dragons surprised the 23rd-ranked Orange 84-79 for their first win over a ranked team since 1996. Jardine and Jackson, who are from Philadelphia, weren’t about to let that happen again.

After missing five of its first six shots, Syracuse made 27 of its next 35, putting the game well out of reach by hitting 18 of its first 20 shots in the second half. The Orange shot 71.9 percent in the period and outrebounded the Dragons 38-27 in the game.

No. 6 Pittsburgh 61, American 46

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Brad Wanamaker scored 19 points and Pittsburgh held American to a lone basket for 10 minutes in the first half, earning its 200th victory under coach Jamie Dixon.

In his eighth season, Dixon reached the mark in his 255th game, faster than all but 11 other coaches in NCAA history. Clair Bee of Rider and Long Island accomplished it in a record 231 games during the 1930s.

Only two other coaches, Mark Few of Gonzaga and Roy Williams of Kansas, also made it to 200 victories in their eighth season.

Gilbert Brown, coming off a 28-point game against Maryland-Eastern Shore, added 15 points as the Panthers (12-1) wrapped up their nonconference schedule with a game that was much closer than they probably expected.

Vlad Moldoveanu scored 23 points for American (7-5).

No. 7 San Diego St. 56, IUPUI 54

LAS VEGAS (AP) — D.J. Gay scored 18 points and Malcolm Thomas fell just shy of a double-double as San Diego State won its school-record 14th straight game.

After shooting an airball to end the first half, Gay took a charge to start the second, touching off a 20-5 run to give the Aztecs (14-0) the lead for good in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.

Thomas, despite hurting a toe in the last game, had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Alex Young put the Jaguars (5-8) within two points with just over a minute left, but he missed a jumper on their next possession.

Young led IUPUI with 19 points.

The Aztecs have the nation’s second-longest active winning streak behind No. 1 Duke’s 21 straight.

No. 8 Villanova 76, Monmouth 36

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — Corey Fisher had 20 points and Corey Stokes added 19 to lead Villanova over Monmouth.

In a rematch of a 2006 NCAA tournament first-round game — one the Wildcats struggled to win, 58-45 — Villanova (10-1) left no doubts this time around. The Wildcats treated the sellout crowd of 3,896 — including many who made the 90-mile drive from the Big East school’s campus — to a fair share of power and precision befitting a Top 10 team.

The Wildcats built a 44-17 halftime lead en route to their fifth consecutive victory.

Phil Wait had eight points for the Hawks (4-8).

No. 9 Missouri 75, No. 21 Illinois 64

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Laurence Bowers made a four-point play with a layup and two free throws after an intentional foul with 40 seconds to go, fueling a huge final minute for Missouri.

Marcus Denmon had 15 points and Bowers added 13 for the Tigers (11-1), who won the Braggin’ Rights game for the second straight year after dropping the previous nine.

Mike Davis had 17 points for Illinois (10-3), which has dropped two straight after getting upset by Illinois-Chicago on Saturday. Mike Tisdale, who committed the intentional foul when he pushed Bowers from behind, had 13 rebounds and nine points.

The Tigers scored eight points in a 9-second span of the final minute, going up by nine, and outscored Illinois 21-7 over the final 3:16.

No. 18 Texas 67, No. 12 Michigan St. 55

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Jordan Hamilton scored 21 points and Tristan Thompson had 17 points and 15 rebounds for Texas.

The Longhorns (10-2) became the first nonconference team to win at the Breslin Center since Duke on Dec. 3, 2003, snapping a 52-game winning streak.

Texas trailed only once in the first half and once just after halftime on Michigan State’s home court, where Tom Izzo has won nearly 92 percent of his games over the last 14 years.

Kalin Lucas had 17 points for Michigan State (8-4). Draymond Green fouled out with 5:12 left, shortly after making his first field goal on his eighth attempt. He finished with a season-low four points and eight rebounds.

No. 13 Kentucky 89, Winthrop 52

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Doron Lamb’s 32 points set a Kentucky record for most in a game by a freshman.

Lamb broke the record of 31 set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991, on a layup that put the Wildcats up 28 with 6:38 remaining. He walked off to a standing ovation moments later after making 11 of 12 field goals, including 7 of 8 3-pointers.

Brandon Knight shook off a bruised left knee to finish with 21 points and five rebounds for the Wildcats (9-2).

Matt Morgan led Winthrop (5-7) with 18 points.

No. 15 Baylor 83, San Diego 50

HONOLULU (AP) — Quincy Acy and Anthony Jones each scored 14 points, and LaceDarius Dunn added 13 for Baylor in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic.

The Bears (8-1) had five players finish in double figures and they broke the game open at the start as they bounced back from their first loss of the season. Freshman Perry Jones III added 11 points and six rebounds while reserve Nolan Dennis had 10 points.

The Toreros (2-9) missed their first 10 3-point attempts and committed 18 turnovers. Ken Rancifer had 10 points to lead San Diego, which shot 33 percent, while Baylor shot 55 percent.

No. 20 Florida 66, Radford 55

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Erving Walker scored 20 points and Kenny Boynton added 11 for Florida.

The Gators bounced back from a numbing home loss to Jacksonville, but probably did little to avoid falling out of the rankings for the second time this season.

Chandler Parsons finished with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists for Florida (9-3), which opened the season ranked ninth but dropped steadily after close wins over Morehead State, Florida Atlantic and Florida State. The Gators fell out of the AP poll following a three-point loss to Central Florida this month.

Johnathan Edwards had 15 points and nine rebounds for Radford (2-9).

No. 22 Notre Dame 93, UMBC 53

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Tim Abromaitis had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Notre Dame over winless Maryland-Baltimore County.

It was the second double-double of the season for Abromaitis and the third in his career. He equaled a career high in rebounds.

Scott Martin added 15 points — his 10th straight game in double figures — for the Irish (11-1), while Carleton Scott added 12 and Ben Hansbrough 10.

Chris De La Rosa had 15 points for the Retrievers (0-12).

No. 24 Central Florida 64, Massachusetts 59

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — Isaac Sosa scored 14 points in his first start of the season and Central Florida won in its debut as a nationally ranked team.

Keith Clanton added 13 points and Marcus Jordan returned from an ankle injury after halftime and scored all seven of his points in the second half for UCF (11-0), which joined the AP Top 25 this week for the first time in school history.

Jordan, son of Michael Jordan, hit five free throws in the final minute to seal it for the Knights.

Anthony Gurley had 17 points for the Minutemen (7-4).
