BLAKELY — On a day when fans and friends of football all around the country were looking at stats on the football field, Early County running back Camery Flowers was looking at something else.

“I wanted to go where I could get the best education,” said Flowers, who signed a national letter of intent and accepted a football scholarship to Wofford in a ceremony in the Early County media center on Wednesday morning.

Flowers had a long list of schools courting him, including West Georgia, Samford and others, but he’s headed to Spartanburg, S.C., because of what his future promises off the football field.

“Wofford is a prestigious school, and they have a great football program,” Flowers said. “I liked everything about the school, and I liked their football program. And they have a great education to offer me.”

Flowers, one of the top student-athletes at Early County, has the numbers on the field, too. He was a terror for four years at Early, where he did a little of everything, playing running back, defensive back and returning kickoffs.

He finished his career with four kickoff returns for touchdowns, including two as a senior, and amassed more than 1,000 combined yards as a senior in rushing and receptions, scoring 11 touchdowns.

“He had a great career for us,” Early County coach Trey Wolf said.

“He gained more than 2,500 yards rushing and gained more than 1,000 yards in receiving. They (Wofford) recruited him as a running back, and they’re getting a good one. He’s a great student and a special athlete. This is a great opportunity for him, both academically and athletically.”
