BLAKELY — Officials with Primary Care of Southwest Georgia announced this week that, in partnership with Horizons Community Solutions, its second annual fundraising event collected more than $7,300 to fight cancer.

Officials said the funds raised during “A Midsummer’s Evening of Hope” will cover approximately 58 breast cancer screenings and diagnostic exams and also support a small portion of the cost of individualized education and health navigation for Early County residents.

Officials said the funds may also pay for transportation assistance to assist Early County residents in traveling to and from cancer treatments.

“Every dollar donated to the Cancer Coalition (of South Georgia) helps to support our work right here,” Horizons CEO Diane Fletcher said in a statement.

The Cancer Coalition is a division of Horizons.

The fundraiser featured a buffet dinner, silent and live auctions, and live musical entertainment by Tanner Gleaton. Guests had the opportunity to learn about Horizons’ mission and its work in the community.

Dr. Adam Jones of Radiation Oncology Associates spoke on why it is important to have regular cancer screenings and how the screenings save lives.

Several sponsors donated items for the silent and live auctions and provided other support. They included Golden Peanut/Archer Daniels Midland Company, Olam Edible Nuts, Bank of Early, BJ’s Express-Marathon, Cornerstone Insurance Group, First State Bank of Blakely, Pioneer Community Hospital of Early, Early County Gin Inc., Early County High School, Agri Insurance Service Inc., Collier Insurance Agency and Collier Realty Company, Five Star Credit Union and Early Auto Parts/NAPA.

Primary Care of Southwest Georgia and Horizons leadership, staff and volunteers said they plan to host the fundraiser again in 2018. Planning will begin early next year, and those interested in sponsorships, volunteering or learning more are encouraged to contact Brooks Carter at (229) 723-2660, ext. 7139, or [email protected].
