From Staff Reports
ALBANY — The Albany Police Department has been awarded a grant from The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America for its Project Lifesaver program.
The grant of $5,000 will go toward resources and training for the police department in case someone with Alzheimer’s goes missing. With the grant, the APD will be able to improve its ability to locate and return the individuals with Alzheimer’s disease to safety.
“The city of Albany Police Department plays a vital role in protecting the community, including individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias,” Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., president and CEO of AFA, said.” The Project Lifesaver program has been a remarkable resource that has provided families some peace of mind in the knowledge that there is a service to help locate and protect their loved ones. AFA is pleased to support the expansion of this project and help make a difference for the families living with Alzheimer’s.”
Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said on receiving the grant, “We are exciting to share this opportunity with the community. This funding will help the city of Albany bring further awareness to advance the understanding of cognitive diseases and how they impact families. The grant will provide the financial support to the Albany Police Department’s Project Lifesaver program. The funding will be used to purchase the latest PLS technology to help reduce the search time to locate individuals who wander away from their loved ones.”
The AFA granted the funding for the Project Lifesaver program through its Bi-Annual Grant Program which “provides grants to nonprofit AFA member organizations for programs and services that help further AFA’s mission of delivering optimal care and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses.”
AFA was able to provide the grant to the Albany Police Department as a result of the “generosity of individual contributions, grants, sponsorships and AFA development activities.” For more information and to contribute, visit www.alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/.
