Blood donations encouraged ahead of expected slow supply in holiday season
American Red Cross, OneBlood offer opportunities to donate blood in Southwest Georgia
Staff Reports
ALBANY — The busy holiday season is approaching, so the American Red Cross is encouraging donors to give blood now to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this winter.
The Red Cross, along with OneBlood, is hosting drives to replenish the supply through the end of the year.
Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, many regular donors tend to delay giving due to holiday activities and travel. Red Cross officials said this often decreases the amount of donated blood available for patients, and more donations are needed in the weeks leading up to the holidays to help stock the shelves for patients.
Upcoming opportunities in Albany to donate through the Red Cross for the remainder of the year include:
— noon-5 p.m., Thursday, Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Road
— 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Nov. 16, Albany State University West, 2400 Gillionville Road
— 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Nov. 24, Albany Mall, 2601 Dawson Road

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements, Red Cross officials said.
The Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood. To make an appointment to give blood, download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
