ALBANY — Georgia River Network and Flint Riverkeeper are preparing for their annual Fall Float on the Flint, a three-day, 48-mile canoe/kayak trip down the Flint River from near Baconton to near Bainbridge. The trip is set for Oct. 7-9, and registration is now open.
Planners expect more than 100 people to participate in the educational adventure that will allow participants to take in the best the Flint has to offer: beautiful blue hole springs, lively shoals, rich history and abundant wildlife. Fashioned after other annual weeklong Paddle Georgia events, the group will tent camp at the Rocky Bend Flint River Retreat.
Past participants will note that this is a shorter journey than in previous years, as organizers have shortened the first day of the trip from 20-plus -miles to about 12 miles.
This year marks the fourth year that GRN and the Riverkeeper have partnered to plan the event. Both organizations are working to establish the Flint River Water Trail, a boating trail along the length of the river with developed public access points that allow river users to safely explore the river’s entire 346 miles.
The event also coincides with the release by the University of Georgia Press of the Flint River User’s Guide earlier this year. The guide is a 243-page comprehensive recreational guide to the river that provides information about the river’s natural and cultural history.
Registration is now open at http://www.garivers.org/paddle_georgia/fallfloat.html, or interested participants can call Paddle Georgia Coordinator Joe Cook at (706) 409-0128.
