ALBANY — First Baptist Church of Albany was named the 2018 Partner of the Year at the Dougherty County School System’s Partners in Excellence breakfast on Wednesday.

Pastor Butch Knight accepted the award on behalf of the church, which was honored for its service and support of Robert H. Harvey Elementary School.

Knight thanked school system officials and said that it was the church’s honor to support students in Albany.

First Baptist has been an active partner at Robert Harvey for years and is a fixture in various school activities and outreach events including their “Good Behavior Giveaways,” the school’s fall carnival and teacher and staff recognition events.

The church stepped up following the January 2017 storms, and after Hurricane Michael. During those traumatic experiences, church members assembled and fed students in the Robert Harvey neighborhood for days while power outages and blocked roads prevented many from leaving their homes.

The breakfast is one way the district gives thanks to the partners — including businesses, non-profits and churches — that support non-academic needs of schools and students. Hosted by the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, the event was sponsored by U-Save-It Pharmacy and Procter & Gamble.
