LUMPKIN — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Saturday was investigating a trooper-involved fatal shooting at the request of the Georgia State Patrol. The shooting incident occurred late Friday night in Stewart County.

Preliminary information from the GBI said that around 11:57 p.m. Friday a GSP trooper observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 27 near milepost 11 in Lumpkin.

The vehicle was described as a 2009 Pontiac coupe. When the driver of the vehicle did not stop, the trooper pursued it as it traveled southbound on Highway 27. During the pursuit, the report said, the Pontiac wrecked on Humber Field Road in Stewart County.

The driver emerged from the vehicle and began shooting at the trooper, the GBI report said. The trooper returned fire and the driver was fatally wounded during the exchange. The GBI said an autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta and that the driver’s name was not being released pending family notification.

A female passenger was in the Pontiac, but was not involved in the shooting incident, the GBI said. She was taken to Southwest Regional Medical Center in Cuthbert, Georgia where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released, the report stated.

The trooper was uninjured. GBI officials said they will continue their independent investigation. When complete, it will be turned over to the Stewart County District Attorney’s Office for review.
