LEESBURG — The last Lee County Commission meeting of the year was also the last for Chairman Dennis Roland.
While recognizing him for his service, the commission also heard an update on the Hurricane Michael storm debris cleanup from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, recognized the late William Franklin “W.F.” Griffin and made appointments to several county boards.
Roland served on the commission for three terms, and was recognized during Tuesday night’s meeting with an official proclamation.
“As all of you may know, this is Dennis Roland’s last meeting, and we’re going to miss him,” Vice Chair Billy Mathis said. “Dennis is one of those people who ran for all the right reasons, and served honorably the citizens of Lee County, and cares for the citizens of Lee County deeply. Every decision he makes is not based on politics or favoritism.
“Every decision that I’ve ever seen Dennis Roland make was because of his heartfelt conviction about what he thinks is right for the citizens in this county.”
Roland was presented a miniature tractor and a proclamation read by Mathis.
Officials said debris pickup in the county is progressing. Citizens concerned about piles or pieces of debris are asked to keep in mind that the trucks can only handle a limited amount of weight, which means that the pickup crews might have to come back for larger trees.
The root balls can require different equipment to remove, which means that removal of some root balls could occur during the second pass. Officials said Ceres Environmental Services is expected to make three full passes for cleanup in the county.
After the end of the first pass is announced, citizens in Lee will have seven days to push any remaining debris into the right-of-way for Ceres to remove. The second pass will remove the remaining debris.
The commission presented a proclamation in honor of Griffin, who recently passed away at the age of 82. He was a Baker County native who moved to Lee in 1957, and was active in the community. He was employed at the Marine Corps Logistic Base-Albany for more than 30 years, and he served two terms as president of the Lee County Chamber of Commerce.
He also served on the county’s Board of Tax Assessors for over 50 years.
The commission also made multiple appointments including the following:
— Mike Sabot to the Lee County Board of Elections and Registration;
— Dave Clearman and Tami Perry to the Lee County Parks and Recreation Authority;
— Johnny Barthlein, Ed Duffy, Troy Golden and Bill Williams to the Lee County Utilities Authority.
The next scheduled commission meeting is set for Jan. 8.
