LEESBURG — Leshia Michelle Green of Lee County, who had been wanted in connection to the Sept. 27 death of her 4-year-old foster child, turned herself in to authorities Sunday, according to officials with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
She has been charged with felony murder in the death, Lee County authorities say.
“Ms. Green did turn herself in to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office after lunch on Sunday,” Chief Deputy Lewis Harris said. “We started looking for her on Friday. She was out on bond.”
Green was arrested on Sept. 29 and charged with two counts of child cruelty after paramedics were called to her 141 Mayfield Drive residence around 4:08 a.m. and found the critically injured child. The 4-year-old child was transported to the hospital and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
“The foster mother has been arrested,” Lee County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Lewis Harris told The Herald last September. “Further charges (in the case) are pending. We’re still waiting for lab results to come back from the GBI crime lab and for evidence to be processed.”
Lewis confirmed that those results came back last week and felony murder charges were issued for Green and a 15-year old juvenile in connection to the incident.
“Green was charged in September on two counts of cruelty to the child in the first degree and she was released on bond,” Harris said. “The GBI was able to get the autopsy results back last week at which point they took out warrants for felony murder against Green and a 15-year-old juvenile.
“We went and picked up the 15-year-old first, we knew where he was. We have not released his name yet, but he is involved and is charged with felony murder and two counts of cruelty to a child in the first degree.”
According to Harris, after the juvenile was in custody, authorities began searching for Green.
“Once we had him, then we started looking for her (Green),” Harris said. “That was Friday afternoon and then she turned herself in without incident on Sunday and has been charged with felony murder.”
