Man in Albany drug case gets attention of federal law enforcement
Suspect who gave false name may be linked to homicide investigations
From Staff Reports
ALBANY — A Nov. 21 traffic stop for tinted windows that were too dark resulted in the arrest of a man with many aliases who has murder convictions and who may be linked to other homicide investigations, Maj. Prurince Dice, commander of the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit, said Monday.
Dice has called a 3 p.m. Tuesday news conference to talk about the case that had drawn the attention of federal agencies, including ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
In a synopsis Monday, Dice said an ADDU unit conducted a traffic stop Nov. 21 at Liberty Expressway and Blaylock Street involving a black BMW because of a window tint violation. After making contact with the driver ADDU officers “developed probable cause to search the vehicle,” at which time the driver bolted.
“The suspect was successfully captured and brought back to the scene,” Dice said in an email. “Agents then continued the search of the vehicle and discovered approximately 11 pounds of marijuana (street value $13,200) tightly wrapped in foam, plastic and transmission fluid inside of a large bucket located in the trunk of the car. A firearm was also discovered during the traffic stop.”
The driver gave police a false name and said he was 40 years old. When investigators discovered it was a bogus name, they learned the suspect had so many aliases that it was difficult to identify him, Dice said. At one point, Dice said, the suspect told Dougherty County Jail staff to “just pick one” of the aliases.
“After weeks of follow-up,” Dice said, “agents had been contacted by ICE agents and other federal agencies who advised to put a hold on this subject because he was under federal investigation. Agents discovered that the suspect has several murder convictions in the U.S. and Jamaica. Agents also discovered evidence which may link the suspect to other murder investigations.”
ADDU also made contact with law enforcement authorities in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who stated that the suspect is involved in identity theft for stealing his brother’s identity, Dice said, adding the case was ongoing.
