ALBANY — With the opening Tuesday of a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Thomasville, the federal disaster relief agency now has six such centers operating in Southwest Georgia.

A seventh is expected to open soon in Worth County, officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency said. Worth and Thomas counties were added Monday to the national disaster list for individual assistance for damage from the storms, high winds and tornadoes that rolled through the area on Jan. 21-22.

The latest center is located at the Thomas County Fire Department, 1202 Remington Ave., in Thomasville.

Centers also are located at the Albany Mall, 2601 Dawson Road, and the former East Albany police station, 1721 E. Oglethorpe Blvd., both in Albany; the Cordele Fire Department, 112 Eddie Road, Cordele; the Turner Civic Center, 354 Lamar St., Ashburn, and the Cook County Administration Building, 1200 S. Hutchinson Ave., Adel.

All of the centers are open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. They are closed Sundays.

Dougherty, Crisp, Turner, Cook, Wilcox and Berrien counties were originally on the federal disaster list Jan. 26. Dougherty was also listed for Jan. 2 storms.

Anyone in the eligible counties whose residence or business sustained damage from the storms can meet with FEMA officials and register at any of the centers. Registration may also be done online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at (800) 621-3362 or TTY (800) 462-7585.

Registration is required before help can be assessed. Those who are offered recovery from the U.S. Small Business Administration also must register with that organization. FEMA assistance does not duplicate private insurance but can help with uninsured or underinsured damage.

Information a would-be registrant needs to have available includes Social Security Number, address of the damaged home or apartment, a description of the damage, information about insurance coverage, a current contact telephone number, an address where the registrant can receive mail, and bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds. Only one member of a household should register.
