PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Calhoun County tops Randolph-Clay in early-season Region 1-A battle

EDISON — In an early-season battle between two teams expected to contend for the Region 1-A title, Calhoun County outslugged visiting Randolph-Clay Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at Calhoun County High School.
The Cougars (6-0, 4-0 Region 1-A) got 31 points from Herald Super 6er Quenten Taylor to down the Red Devils and remain in first place in the region standings. The two teams meet again in the regular-season finale on Feb. 7.
“It was definitely a hard-fought game,” Calhoun County coach Marcus Shaw said. “I wasn’t happy with the clock management and there is room to improve. But I saw some bright spots and I was satisfied with the effort.”
Sherrod Williams finished with 13 points, Jacob Cratic added 12 and Jerek Solite added 11 for the Cougars.
Randolph-Clay was led by two-time Herald Super 6er Gary McCrae’s 27 points, while Keyshawn Baker added 11.
BAINBRIDGE 96, WORTH COUNTY 93: In a game that seemed more fitting for the state tournament, Bainbridge outlasted Worth County in overtime.
Georgia commit Tyree Crump finished with a career-high 54 points to lead the Bearcats (5-1), while teammate Devonte Jones finished with 14.
Worth County got 34 points from Anfernee McLemore, while Brandon Moore added 19. Jamon Moore finished with 18 points, while Kidanas Goodman added 13 for the Rams.
SEMINOLE COUNTY BOYS 94, BERRIEN 42: Seminole County doubled up Berrien and won its second straight Region 1-AA game in as many nights. Behind Herald Super 6er Jordan Harris’ 32 points, the Indians rolled to an easy victory. Anfernee King finished with 28 points to help Seminole improve to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in region play.
The Indians play at Early County in a key region game Tuesday night.
PELHAM GIRLS 71, EARLY COUNTY 51: Pelham improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 1-AA play with a victory over Early County. The game pitted a pair of Albany Herald Super 6er’s against each other — Pelham’s Briunna Freeman and Early’s Tynicia McCoy.
Freeman led the Lady Hornets with 29 points and 12 rebounds, while Mahogany Randall and Destiny Thomas finished with 11 points each in the win.
McCoy finished with 26 for the Lady Bobcats. Dorian White added 11 points, while Aliyah Pugh finished with 10.
BAINBRIDGE GIRLS 79, WORTH COUNTY 13: Bainbridge had four players finish in double figures to lead the Lady Bearcats past Worth County. Tameria Levens led the way with 19 points, Nadia Marshall added 18, Patra Parris finished with 12, while Alex Carter added 10.
