Worth County baseball beats Westover

Denzel Gowdy led the Worth County Rams to a 7-3 victory over Westover Saturday afternoon at Pope Park in Sylvester. The two teams were scheduled to play at the Paul Eames Sports Complex in Albany on Friday but rain pushed the game back to Saturday. Poor field conditions moved the game to Pope Park. The two will play again on April 15 at the Paul Eames Complex.

Gowdy blasted two home runs for the Rams. Gowdy went 2 for 2 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored. He homered in the first and third innings.

But Worth brought home two runs in the third inning, and matched that run total in the fourth. In the third, the Rams scored on a solo home run by Gowdy.

Worth built upon its lead with two runs in the fourth. A clutch ground out scored Seth Newell to open the scoring in the frame.

A one-run fifth inning helped bring Westover within four. An RBI single by Tanner Mitchum sparked Westover’s rally.

The Rams survived Westover’s surge and put up one run of their own in the fifth on Shelby Cox’s RBI single.

One run in the top of the sixth helped Westover close its deficit to 7-3 but that was as close as they would get.

Cox went 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Jonathan Cirullo finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and Reece Bozeman finished 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Tanner Mitchum, Terrance Mosely and Devin Ducksworth each had two hits for the Patriots.
