Lee County basketball players named to region team

Lee County’s Kris Gardner was named to the Region 1-AAAAAA all-region first team announced on Friday. Jalin Wimberly was named to the second-team, while Tyler McConnell and Zee Johnson were named honorable mention.

Ronald Wilson was named as the region’s defensive player of the year after helping the Trojans to the state tournament.

On the girls side, Lee County’s Alexis Hickson was named to the second-team, while Deambria Abner was named as an honorable mention.

Pelicans’ Davis out 1-2 weeks

The New Orleans Pelicans received good news when the team announced Sunday that All-Star forward Anthony Davis had no structural damage to his shoulder and will be sidelined only one or two weeks.

Davis had to leave Saturday’s game against the Heat when he re-aggravated a shoulder injury that had forced Davis to miss the All-Star Game and two regular-season games.

There had been concern that this second injury to the same area of his right shoulder might cause Davis to be sidelined for a prolonged period.

However, the team announced that an MRI exam was performed and the injury has been diagnosed as a shoulder sprain.

Davis is averaging 23.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks and is critical to the Pelicans’ hopes of making the playoffs.

The news was not quite as encouraging for Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson, who is expected to be sidelined 2-4 weeks with a sprained MCL.

Anderson is averaging 14.6 points and 5.1 rebounds while hitting 34.1 percent of his 3-point shots.

Celtics’ Sullinger out for year

Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger will miss the remainder of the season with a left metatarsal stress fracture in his left foot.

The team announced the decision Sunday following further medical evaluation at the New England Baptist Hospital.

Sullinger said he felt some discomfort in the foot last week after a win over the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 11.

After the All-Star break, Sullinger removed himself from practice in Sacramento on Wednesday. Then team trainer Ed Lacerte took him for the initial tests Thursday that revealed the foot injury.

Sullinger was averaging 14.4 points and 8.1 rebounds in 51 games this season.

Bochy returns to Giants

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy returned to the team just three days after being admitted to a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital to have two stents inserted into his heart.

Bochy came back Sunday to the World Series champions to supervise workouts for pitchers and catchers. The hospital where the procedure was performed is across the street from the Giants’ spring training stadium.

“I couldn’t feel any better,” Bochy said. “I am grateful for the doctors and want to thank all the well-wishers who sent me messages.”

Bochy, 59, owns a 667-629 record and three World Series championships in eight seasons as the Giants’ manager. He previously was the San Diego Padres’ manager from 1995-2006, compiling a 951-975 record and leading the team to the 1998 World Series.

In a nine-year major league playing career, Bochy was a catcher for the Houston Astros, New York Mets and San Diego. He hit .239 with a .298 on-base percentage, a .388 slugging percentage, 26 homers and 93 RBIs in 358 games.
