ALBANY — After a month-long break in homicides, Albany’s 22nd case of the year occurred Sunday morning.
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler identified the shooting victim as Thomas Anthony Dixon, 50. Fowler said Dixon was shot in the chest. An autopsy is expected to be conducted Monday at the State Crime Lab.
Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said officers were called 9:38 a.m. to the shooting at 612 Willis Road. Fowler said Dixon was pronounced dead at 10:08 a.m.
Banks said a male was seen running north on Willis Road after the shooting.
She said the suspect was described as a black male with a medium to dark skin complexion. He is 5 feet 6 and weighs 160 pounds. Banks said the male was last seen wearing a dark gray hoodie with gold lettering and dark pants.
Before Sunday, there had not been a homicide in Albany since the Oct. 23 death of Diane Kelly, the fifth that month. 2017 will go down as a year with only two months in which a homicide did not occur — July and November.
The 22 homicides include 21 deaths that occurred this calendar year and one from a 2014 cold case.
