AMERICUS — Shirley Green-Reese was recently awarded the Boys & Girls Club National Medallion for her years of service to the organization.
Green-Reese, an Americus city councilwoman and board president for the Boys & Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County, was considered, based on the award’s criteria, worthy of the honor “for unusually devoted service.” The award notes that she is someone “whose unusually devoted service has contributed greatly in helping youth to achieve a fuller and richer life through the positive guidance and influence of the Boys & Girls Clubs.”
“This honorable National Medallion recognition on behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America identifies my 15 years of dedication, commitment and steadfast service to the Boys & Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County, Macon County Boys & Girls Club and the Furlow Charter School’s Boys & Girls Club,” said Green-Reese. “Over the last 15 years, I have provided 100 percent of my time, support and involvement to make a difference for the deserving club members we serve on a daily basis.
“I am honored, delighted and beyond excited to receive this prestigious award from the national organization. I am also humble and proud to be one of the dedicated volunteers. In spite of my busy schedule, I have always found the time and energy to give back to my community and other communities at the state, regional and national levels.”
Recipients of the medallion typically are Boys & Girls Club board volunteers. Green-Reese received the medallion and a three-diamond lapel pin representing her years of service to the Boys & Girls Club.
The award was issued in September but did not get into Green-Reese’s possession until Monday due to a change in leadership at the Americus-Sumter County club.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America officials say that, since the inception of the national awards program in 1947, the organization has encouraged clubs to foster support of volunteers and professionals by presenting national awards at annual club dinners, area council meetings and other Boys & Girls Clubs functions.
