ALBANY — Aspire Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Services held its first “Aspire To Shine 5K + Fun Run” at Darton State College on Saturday, attracting more than 100 runners.

Children and adults were invited, for a small entry fee, to participate in the Fun Run, 5K run or fun walk. Awards were given to the top five Fun Run winners ages 14 and under, first overall male and female 5K runner and the top three for all age groups.

“May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, so we wanted to have this event to raise awareness and support for mental health disorders and reduce the stigmas attached to them,” said Lisa Spears, LPC, child and adolescent coordinator for Aspire Clubhouse. “One in four children is diagnosed each year with some sort of mental health disorder and the Fun Run is a great way to bring the community together in support of this great cause.”

In addition to the runs, activities included bounce houses for kids, cotton candy, a photo booth and a raffle with prizes — including gift cards, sunglasses and designer rugs — donated by local businesses.

Also at the event was the Aspire Clubhouse, a resiliency program that provides a safe environment for children and teenagers to learn about their respective diagnoses and to develop valuable life and coping skills, with an aim toward decreasing out-of-home placements and juvenile justice involvement.

According to Spears, members of the Aspire Clubhouse have the opportunity to develop healthy relationships with staff and peers through peer support services, educational support, family involvement activities, employment support services, structured recreational activities, social outings and health and nutrition activities.

“For those living with mental health disorders, finding real help leads to real hope,” Spears said.

Spears also participated in the 5K run, winning top over-all female runner. Jalen Owens won first place in the Fun Run and William Brown was the top over-all male runner. Winners in the overall master category were Dennis Brooks (male) and Charlene Stokes (female).

The mission of Aspire BHDD Services, according to Spears, is to offer affordable, accessible and quality mental health care as well as addictive disease and/or developmental disability services by skilled professionals who are sensitive to the needs of individuals and families served.

“We want to lead the community toward health, hope and recovery,” Spears said.
